We can experience it during any uncomfortable situation. First our shoulder and neck muscles stiffen, clear thinking appears to disappear and irrational content fills our brains, a quickened heart rate and flushed cheeks may be experienced and in severe cases sweating can eventuate. Yup you guessed it……stress! Yet for most of us we accept it as a major part of day to day living. Stress in small doses is necessary for human survival, it alerts and prepares us for potential danger but in more recent times stress is becoming more of a problem as we struggle to keep up with modern day demands.
Stress

Stress is a major contributor to those nasty disease causing agents known as free radicals that circulate in our system. Free radicals can also be produced from pollution, smoke inhalation and general unhealthy living. They are responsible for a myriad of diseases such as cancer, hypertension and heart disease. During stressful situations the production of these agents becomes high and over time puts us at risk of developing chronic if not faou’ve probably heard it all before and unfortunately there are no quick fixes or easy way outs.

Evidence has shown us time and time again that a diet high in vegetables and unprocessed foods is an essential part of healthy living; these foods also contain anti oxidants which act as scavenges against free radicals.

Know and understand your triggers for stress and work out a plan for yourself to avoid stressful situations. Relaxation therapy in the form of yoga or meditation can also be of great benefit. Make some time for yourself during the week doing something that you love to do.

And of course 20 minutes a day at least three times a week of cardiovascular activity is essential for reducing stress levels and all important to general good health.
